As the ability to read is the basis of the ability to learn. As generating pleasure in reading generates chances in life. And quite simply because reading is fun.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Situation in Germany: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>5 million people are functional illiterates<\/li>\n<li>5% of the 15-year old have difficulties in reading and writing<\/li>\n<li>5%of the people between 16 and 65 years are only able to understand the simplest texts<\/li>\n<li>000 pupils leave schools without graduation<\/li>\n<li>15 bn. Euro consequential charges arise during the next 10 years<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What we do (e.g): <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>advocate for reading and media competency;<\/li>\n<li>scientific research, political recommendations and programs;<\/li>\n<li>pilot and research projects;<\/li>\n<li>early infant development in the family; and<\/li>\n<li>projects at school or outside school.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>We create movement <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>800,000 children are enthralled each year by the current gift book \u201cI will make you a gift of a story\u201d on World Book Day on 23rd April.<\/li>\n<li>200,000 \u201cReading Friends\u201d books were given to adults as a gift on World Book Day 2014.<\/li>\n<li>Providing a network for 150,000 volunteers, actively involved in reading and storytelling.<\/li>\n<li>3,500 young people campaign for reading as reading scouts in schools.<\/li>\n<li>38,500 teachers from all types of schools are actively involved in the Stiftung Lesen\u2019s teachers\u2019 club.<\/li>\n<li>290 Reading Clubs offer a room as a sheltered meeting point with books, magazines and media to children and teenager.\n<ul>\n<li>million young families receive <em>Reading Starter Sets<\/em> by 2018.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>400,000 Youth receive more than 1,5 million magazines due to the project \u201cMagazines in schools\u201d<\/li>\n<li>27 Million Books arrived in families with children during several Happy-Meal Book Campaigns.<\/li>\n<li>Well-known reading ambassadors enthrall children and young people.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The national reading day <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2026is the largest reading festival in Germany \u2026moves about 100.000 voluntary readers \u2026elates 1 million of listeners \u2026and thus strengthens reading culture in Germany.<\/p>\n<p><em>Consequently the National Reading Day is the project of Stiftung Lesen that generates most media attention<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>We are part of EU READ <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Consortium of European reading promotion organizations, exchanging knowledge, experiences and concepts, developing new strategies for the promotion of reading.
