They can decide whether libraries can give internet access or offer services. They can determine what libraries can do with their collections.<\/p>\n<p>Copyright has a particular role in the last of these.<\/p>\n<p>The right rules are essential for libraries to support research and education, to preserve, to lend books.<\/p>\n<p>Clearly understanding copyright takes more than 10 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>But as an important area for advocacy \u2013 especially if your laws now aren\u2019t good enough \u2013 so it\u2019s useful to know what the laws are.<\/p>\n<p>So, and in the week of the World Intellectual Property Organisation\u2019s (WIPO) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifla.org\/node\/92066\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights<\/a>, our twelfth 10-Minute Library Advocate Exercise is to find the library provisions in your national copyright law.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, you can do this in 10 minutes, thanks to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wipo.int\/meetings\/en\/doc_details.jsp?doc_id=389654\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WIPO Report<\/a>. This give an overview of what your law says about libraries. You can also look at what other countries do.<\/p>\n<p>Does anything stand out for you? Do you see any problems?
