{"id":1692,"date":"2019-11-22T12:26:37","date_gmt":"2019-11-22T11:26:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.ifla.org\/lpa\/?p=1692"},"modified":"2019-11-22T12:36:52","modified_gmt":"2019-11-22T11:36:52","slug":"the-10-minute-library-advocate-45-learn-a-striking-library-fact","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ifla.org\/lpa\/2019\/11\/22\/the-10-minute-library-advocate-45-learn-a-striking-library-fact\/","title":{"rendered":"The 10-Minute Library Advocate #45: Learn a Striking Library Fact"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1694\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ifla.org\/lpa\/files\/2019\/11\/10-minute-library-advocate-number-45.png\" alt=\"The 10-Minute Library Advocate #45: Learn a Striking Library Fact\" width=\"500\" height=\"283\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ifla.org\/lpa\/files\/2019\/11\/10-minute-library-advocate-number-45.png 1318w, https:\/\/blogs.ifla.org\/lpa\/files\/2019\/11\/10-minute-library-advocate-number-45-300x170.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ifla.org\/lpa\/files\/2019\/11\/10-minute-library-advocate-number-45-768x434.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.ifla.org\/lpa\/files\/2019\/11\/10-minute-library-advocate-number-45-1024x579.png 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To have an impact in your advocacy, you need to be memorable.<\/p>\n<p>Decision-makers will have lots of people coming to see them, making them to do things.<\/p>\n<p>You need to ensure that what you say and do remains in their minds, and so that they bear you in mind when making choices about laws or funding.<\/p>\n<p>There are various ways of doing this \u2013 using a prop or support (<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ifla.org\/lpa\/2019\/08\/30\/the-10-minute-library-advocate-33-bring-a-prop-or-support\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Exercise #33<\/a>), having a great opening line (<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ifla.org\/lpa\/2019\/08\/09\/the-10-minute-library-advocate-30-get-your-opening-lines-right\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Exercise #30<\/a>), or having a positive or negative scenario (<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ifla.org\/lpa\/2019\/10\/18\/the-10-minute-library-advocate-40-describe-a-positive-or-negative-scenario\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Exercise #40<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>One way to do it is to offer them information that they can then use in their own conversation \u2013 something interesting (or even amusing!) on a personal level.<\/p>\n<p>This can be a great way of getting \u2013 and keeping \u2013 attention!<\/p>\n<p>So for our 45<sup>th<\/sup> 10-Minute Library Advocate exercise, learn a striking library fact.<\/p>\n<p>Examples include the fact that more people go to libraries than to Premier League football, the cinema, or the top-10 tourist attractions combined in <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ifla.org\/public-libraries\/2017\/03\/23\/more-people-use-public-libraries-in-england-than-attend-premier-league-football-matches\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">England<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Or that there are more libraries than McDonalds in <a href=\"http:\/\/lib.nmsu.edu\/liblog\/there-are-more-public-libraries-than-mcdonalds-in-the-u-s-and-58-of-adults-in-the-u-s-have-public-library-cards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">America<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>See what you can find out about libraries in your country.
