Benson,<\/strong> Copyr<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1912 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ifla.org\/lpa\/files\/2020\/02\/Sara-Benson.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"287\" height=\"287\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ifla.org\/lpa\/files\/2020\/02\/Sara-Benson.jpg 287w, https:\/\/blogs.ifla.org\/lpa\/files\/2020\/02\/Sara-Benson-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 287px) 100vw, 287px\" \/>ight Librarian, University of Illinois.<\/p>\n<p>If you are unfamiliar with the work of the HathiTrust Digital Library, fair use week is a great time to familiarize yourself with it.\u00a0 The HathiTrust Digital Library \u201cis a not-for-profit collaborative of academic and research libraries preserving 17+ million digitized items.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a>\u00a0 Essentially, partner libraries digitize volumes of in-copyright and public domain books for preservation and access through the library.\u00a0 The library makes the works available to the fullest extent possible under United States copyright law.\u00a0 Thus, for public domain works, the works are fully available to read and access through the digital library.\u00a0 (The HathiTrust also works with library partners to review works to determine whether they are in-copyright or have fallen into the public domain due to failed formalities).<a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\">[2]<\/a>\u00a0 For in-copyright works, researchers can search to see how many times a particular term is used in the book and on which pages the term is used.\u00a0 This search feature has been deemed a quintessential fair use by the Second Circuit Court of Appeals<a href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\">[3]<\/a> and paved the way for the broader Google Books fair use court decision.<a href=\"#_ftn4\" name=\"_ftnref4\">[4]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Select member affiliated researchers can also engage in text mining with in-copyright books through a special Data Capsule.\u00a0 This capsule allows researchers to use a secure online environment to engage in research and text mining with the book corpus.<\/p>\n<p>If you are unfamiliar with the HathiTrust Digital Library and the HathiTrust Research Center, fair use week is as good a time as any to get familiar with it.\u00a0 What are you waiting for?\u00a0 Dive into the resources available through the HathiTrust and discover a whole new text-mining world!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ftnref1\" name=\"_ftn1\">[1]<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hathitrust.org\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.hathitrust.org\/about<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ftnref2\" name=\"_ftn2\">[2]<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hathitrust.org\/copyright-review\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.hathitrust.org\/copyright-review<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ftnref3\" name=\"_ftn3\">[3]<\/a> Authors Guild v.
