{"id":3325,"date":"2022-02-01T10:55:50","date_gmt":"2022-02-01T09:55:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.ifla.org\/lpa\/?p=3325"},"modified":"2022-02-01T10:55:50","modified_gmt":"2022-02-01T09:55:50","slug":"the-10-minute-international-librarian-83-think-about-different-learning-styles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ifla.org\/lpa\/2022\/02\/01\/the-10-minute-international-librarian-83-think-about-different-learning-styles\/","title":{"rendered":"The 10-Minute International Librarian #83: think about different learning styles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Effective teaching requires two or more people \u2013 the information giver and the information receiver.<\/p>\n<p>For information to be understood, and skills to be learned, the two (or more) people need to be attuned \u2013 in other words, the way that the teacher teaches, and the learner learns, need to fit together.<\/p>\n<p>This can place particular responsibilities on the person giving the information \u2013 either in person, in writing, or in other ways \u2013 to flex their style in order to be most effective.<\/p>\n<p>Why does this matter in libraries?<\/p>\n<p>Many library and information professionals do carry out teaching activities, for example around (information) literacy, to develop digital skills, or the content of library collections.<\/p>\n<p>But event beyond specific training or education sessions, so much of what libraries do is about giving information \u2013 about how to get the best out of the library, its services, and its collections!<\/p>\n<p>So for our 83<sup>rd<\/sup> 10-Minute International Librarian exercise, think about different learning styles.<\/p>\n<p>In your experience, what has proven most effective in helping users to understand the opportunities that are open to them?<\/p>\n<p>How can you structure the information you are providing best? Do users respond better to shorter bursts of learning?
