As local gateways to knowledge, and living forces for education, culture, and inclusion, public libraries \u2013 and the staff that bring them to life \u2013 make society better.<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3760\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3760\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3760\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ifla.org\/lpa\/files\/2024\/10\/PXL_20241007_143107725.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ifla.org\/lpa\/files\/2024\/10\/PXL_20241007_143107725.jpg 700w, https:\/\/blogs.ifla.org\/lpa\/files\/2024\/10\/PXL_20241007_143107725-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ifla.org\/lpa\/files\/2024\/10\/PXL_20241007_143107725-624x468.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3760\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Conference: Public Libraries and Democracy, Barcelona<\/p><\/div>\n<p>IFLA\u2019s global network has taken this Manifesto to heart over the past two years \u2013 with over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifla.org\/public-library-manifesto\/\">35 translations<\/a>, and many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unesco.org\/en\/articles\/updated-public-library-manifesto-2022-generates-global-and-national-impact-public-libraries\">efforts<\/a> to integrate the Manifesto into policy and practice.<\/p>\n<p>In October 2024, multiple IFLA Professional Units came together in Barcelona for a conference and series of meetings that advanced discourse on implementing the Manifesto. Specifically, promoting the role of libraries in progressing social inclusion and the development of democracy through access to knowledge, thought, culture and information.<\/p>\n<p>With a strong emphasis on public libraries and democracy, sustainable urban development, censorship and climate action, the discussions in the conference highlighted the many ways libraries are living the mission set out in the Public Library Manifesto.<\/p>\n<h1>Good Practices in sustainability, literacy and democracy<\/h1>\n<p>This conference featured an opportunity to highlight good practices from libraries across Spain and beyond for implementing the Manifesto in the areas of sustainability, literacy and democracy.<\/p>\n<p>Explore some here for inspiration!<\/p>\n<h2>Good practices: Democracy<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Strengthening the Right to Knowledge: A Partnership between FESABID and Knowledge Rights 21<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[<a href=\"https:\/\/ilc2024.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Presentacion_FESABID_KR21-2024.pdf\">see the presentation here<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>This example showcases how partnerships on access to knowledge and information can bring experts together to advance critical aspects of democratic societies. It highlights the partnership between La Federaci\u00f3n Espa\u00f1ola de Sociedades de Archiv\u00edstica, Biblioteconom\u00eda, Documentaci\u00f3n y Muse\u00edstica (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fesabid.org\/\">FESABID<\/a>) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.knowledgerights21.org\/\">Knowledge Rights 21<\/a> project. FESABID is one of the leading organisations in Spain in the field of intellectual property in the GLAM sector, and its partnership with KR21 will advance a nationwide program focussing on facilitating equitable access to e-books in libraries and protecting users&#8217; rights against limitations.<\/p>\n<h2>Good practices: Literacy<\/h2>\n<p><strong>DIGIBLEND &#8211; Improving adult digital literacy through innovative gamified blended learning<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[<a href=\"https:\/\/ilc2024.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Digiblend.pdf\">read more here<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>This example from Belgrade City Library seeks to improve digital literacy among adults in the Europe through an innovative teaching and learning approach that combines game elements with interactive learning.<\/p>\n<p>The project team identified key challenges and areas for improvement in digital literacy and basic digital skills in older adults. They developed and tested two gamified learning models: Infinity.net and DigiUp, to assess digital skill level and transmit new skills in an accessible and fun way. Find out more: <a href=\"https:\/\/bgb.rs\/en\/projects\/digiblend-improving-adult-digital-literacy-through-innovative-gamified-blended-learning\/\">DIGIBLEND<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Good practices: Sustainability<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Libraries for Sustainability: Ecological Transition laboratory <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[<a href=\"https:\/\/ilc2024.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/4_BP_Laboratori-de-transicio-ecologica_ENG_DEF.pdf\">read more here<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>This project offers an example of bringing library staff together with experts to co-create environmentally sustainable plans.
