Carnegie Library Lab
The Carnegie UK Trust has announced a new program to support innovation and leadership in the public library sector. It aims to support applicants with a range of experience and learning.
The Trust has a long history of commitment to public libraries. Their research in 2011-12 uncovered the fact that public libraries have a place in people’s hearts but not their lives. It identified the need to support innovation and leadership in the public library service to ensure their continued relevance and sustainability.
The programme will run for three years, from 2014 to 2017, and will have five elements built around learning, funding, mentoring, networking and evaluation.
For further information check on the Trust’s web site.
Successful Applicants Announced
EIFL’s Public Library Innovation Programme (EIFL-PLIP) has announced the names of 10 successful applicants for the grant call – Public libraries preparing children and youth for the future. There were over 270 applications from 71 countries
The 10 successful libraries will implement projects that use a wide range of technology – smart phones, 3D printers, computers, the internet, robotics and more – to teach children and youth valuable digital skills, to build their creativity and confidence, and to help serve their health, education, literacy, research, media and other needs.
Regular updates about these services are posted on the EIFL website and social media .

The Gold Coast, a treasure trove of innovation
The content for the Section’s Mid-Term Meeting in Malmo has been updated with Marion Morgan-Bindon’s presentation, How the Digital Media lab delivers on the city’s Culture Strategy now available on-line.
Marion also recently spoke about this initiative at MetLib in Auckland.
A post-Lyon eBook opportunity
It goes without saying that you must attend the Public Libraries Satellite in Birmingham before travelling to Lyon for the IFLA Congress but why not consider going to Paris for the LPD eBook Satellite when you leave Lyon?
LPD is the IFLA section for Libraries serving Persons with Print Disabilities. And this year they have organised a satellite in Paris, directly after IFLA WLIC in Lyon. There are frequent fast trains connecting Lyon with Paris Gare du Lyon. Getting there is easy.
The strong and interesting program will run from 22-23 August.
PLS features in Public Libraries Online!
Thanks to our colleague from MetLib, Corrado Di Tillio, for forwarding the link to his report on our mid-term in Malmo which was published on Public Libraries Online.
It’s an excellent summary of our program.
MetLib’s own Conference and mid-term starts this Sunday (11th) in Auckland.
