{"id":848,"date":"2015-09-17T03:53:40","date_gmt":"2015-09-17T02:53:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.ifla.org\/public-libraries\/?p=848"},"modified":"2015-09-17T03:53:40","modified_gmt":"2015-09-17T02:53:40","slug":"libraries-at-the-crossroads-new-research-released","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ifla.org\/public-libraries\/2015\/09\/17\/libraries-at-the-crossroads-new-research-released\/","title":{"rendered":"Libraries at the Crossroads &#8211; New Research Released"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A\u00a0new survey from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewinternet.org\/2015\/09\/15\/libraries-at-the-crossroads\/\">Pew Research Centre <\/a>highlights the issues currently facing American public libraries and\u00a0provides food for thought for public libraries globally.<\/p>\n<p>The report show that while citizens believe that libraries are important community institutions and profess interest in libraries offering a range of new program possibilities there are signs that the share of Americans visiting libraries has edged downward over the past three years, although it is too soon to know whether or not this is a trend.<\/p>\n<p>Many Americans say they want public libraries to:<br \/>\n\u25fesupport local education;<br \/>\n\u25feserve special constituents such as veterans, active-duty military personnel and immigrants;<br \/>\n\u25fehelp local businesses, job seekers and those upgrading their work skills;<br \/>\n\u25feembrace new technologies such as 3-D printers and provide services to help patrons learn about high-tech gadgetry.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, two-thirds of Americans (65%) ages 16 and older say that closing their local public library would have a major impact on their community.
