{"id":373,"date":"2015-01-15T19:07:36","date_gmt":"2015-01-15T18:07:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.ifla.org\/school-libraries\/?p=373"},"modified":"2015-01-15T19:07:36","modified_gmt":"2015-01-15T18:07:36","slug":"ifla-response-to-development-agenda","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ifla.org\/school-libraries\/2015\/01\/15\/ifla-response-to-development-agenda\/","title":{"rendered":"IFLA response to development agenda"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"NL\">IFLA&#8217;s response to the Synthesis Report of the UN Secretary-General on the Post-2015 Development Agenda: &#8220;The Road to Dignity by 2030: Ending Poverty, Transforming All Lives and Protecting the Planet&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"NL\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><i><span lang=\"NL\">Access to information&#8230;Intellectual Property reform&#8230;access to open data&#8230;affordable access to ICTs.<\/span><\/i><span lang=\"NL\"> These are some of the important issues IFLA and those of us in the greater library and information community are grappling with in a variety of ways.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"NL\">IFLA has been working with the international library community\u2014as well as civil society and member states\u2014to develop its position on the creation of the new\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mail.csulb.edu\/owa\/redir.aspx?C=ardGmILzy0-v3zgXGHvDDpPb9fJ2BNIIAeMDjW2DBzccv7pKPfyLQGnNsqC9vlbY0ZtSsmHSSlk.&amp;URL=http%3a%2f%2fwww.ifla.org%2fnode%2f8139\" target=\"_blank\">UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)<\/a>\u00a0and help ensure that crucial elements such as\u00a0access to information\u00a0are included in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mail.csulb.edu\/owa\/redir.aspx?C=ardGmILzy0-v3zgXGHvDDpPb9fJ2BNIIAeMDjW2DBzccv7pKPfyLQGnNsqC9vlbY0ZtSsmHSSlk.&amp;URL=http%3a%2f%2fwww.ifla.org%2fnode%2f8873\" target=\"_blank\">UN post-2015 Development Agenda<\/a>. Throughout this process, it is important that libraries are seen as being part of the conversation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"NL\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"NL\">Last week, an advance &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/mail.csulb.edu\/owa\/redir.aspx?C=ardGmILzy0-v3zgXGHvDDpPb9fJ2BNIIAeMDjW2DBzccv7pKPfyLQGnNsqC9vlbY0ZtSsmHSSlk.&amp;URL=http%3a%2f%2fsustainabledevelopment.un.org%2fcontent%2fdocuments%2f5527SR_advance%2520unedited_final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Synthesis Report of the UN Secretary-General On the Post-2015 Agenda<\/a>&#8221; was released. The Report\u00a0outlines the priorities and main goals of the post-2015 UN Development Agenda and has a serious goal: to transform our economies, our environment, and our societies. IFLA welcomes the Report and the inclusion of access to information, and encourages the United Nations to recognise the role of access and skills as an essential pillar in the transformational agenda for sustainable development. Unfortunately, we are disappointed that the report lacks substance on the potential of ICTs for development.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"NL\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">We encourage the UN and its Member States to use the\u00a0<span lang=\"NL\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mail.csulb.edu\/owa\/redir.aspx?C=ardGmILzy0-v3zgXGHvDDpPb9fJ2BNIIAeMDjW2DBzccv7pKPfyLQGnNsqC9vlbY0ZtSsmHSSlk.&amp;URL=http%3a%2f%2fwww.lyondeclaration.org%2f\" target=\"_blank\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Lyon Declaration<\/span><\/a> <\/span>during the next stage of intergovernmental negotiations on the post-2015 development agenda to inform the inclusion of access to information, and the skills to use it effectively by:<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoListParagraph\"><span lang=\"NL\">\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><span lang=\"NL\">Acknowledging the public&#8217;s right to access information and data, while respecting the right to individual privacy;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoListParagraph\">\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Recognising the important role of local authorities, information intermediaries and infrastructure such as\u00a0ICTs and an open Internet as a means of implementation;<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoListParagraph\"><span lang=\"NL\">\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><span lang=\"NL\">Adopting policy, standards and legislation to ensure the continued funding, integrity, preservation and provision of information by governments, and access by people;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoListParagraph\"><span lang=\"NL\">\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><span lang=\"NL\">Developing targets and indicators that enable measurement of the impact of access to information and data.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"NL\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">IFLA has already released a\u00a0<span lang=\"NL\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mail.csulb.edu\/owa\/redir.aspx?C=ardGmILzy0-v3zgXGHvDDpPb9fJ2BNIIAeMDjW2DBzccv7pKPfyLQGnNsqC9vlbY0ZtSsmHSSlk.&amp;URL=http%3a%2f%2fwww.ifla.org%2flibraries-development%2ftoolkit\" target=\"_blank\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Toolkit<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0to support library institutions and associations and other civil society organisations to advocate for\u00a0access to information\u00a0in the context of post-2015 UN Development Agenda\u2014thereby empowering signatories of the Lyon Declaration to make the voice of the library community heard on a national level.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"NL\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><b><span lang=\"NL\">What next?<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"NL\">Following the publication of the final synthesis report at the\u00a0end of December 2014, IFLA will produce a revised version of the Toolkit with specific talking points and examples to support meetings with member state representatives that library associations and institutions will organise in early 2015.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"NL\">The final synthesis report will become the baseline for the negations and meetings that will take place throughout 2015, in the lead up to the Special Summit on Sustainable Development.
